Elsternwick Residence

Mim Design have dotted the property with vibrant bursts of colour, which contrast with the more dominant neutral palette.

When it comes to home design, there is sometimes a tendency towards the dramatic and conceptual over the practical and ‘cosy’, towards abstract conceptions that look spectacular and provide plenty of water cooler talk for classroom theoreticians and inspiration for photo spreads in industry magazines, but that don’t fulfil what it is most homeowners actually look for in a dwelling—a certain warmth and ineffable feeling of ‘homeyness’. After all, who wants to sleep in a car dealership or a museum?

Perhaps that’s why this Elsternwick home holds such a strong sense of charm. The work of ever-inspiring Melbourne interior design team Mim Design, the interior of this Bayside property elegantly balances an unmistakable sense of warmth, with a distinctly modern sense of sophistication and luxury.

Contrasting textures and materials are layered over one another and a moody mix of neutral colours is underscored by shades of green and blue. Streaks of silver and the occasional pop of vibrant colour in the living area, light-grey marble and pitch-black fixtures for the bathroom, with the same motif repeated for the kitchen and dining area.

One of the most striking features of the living space is the refurbished fireplace--the perfect winter companion.

Lovelight plantation shutters add a pastoral touch to a thoroughly modern bedroom.

Lovelight S-fold curtains in coal-coloured Domo fabric by Eliott Clarke can be found hanging in the ample living area, allowing homeowners to diffuse the abundant light without dominating the space and adding to the careful balance Mim Design have established.

The centrepiece of the living room is, arguably, the restored fireplace, which pays homage to the property’s Edwardian origins whilst adding a touch of indulgence. Whether your plans revolve around entertaining or simply lounging, Mim have set the scene. The other main attraction is the cushioned window-side nook, with another in the bedroom, and both of which are flanked by Lovelight elliptical blade plantation shutters, providing the perfect space to tackle a book or enjoy a conversation.

According to Mim Design, their inspiration revolved around transforming the home’s “cramped, unusable spaces” into something more resembling a “modern sanctuary”. No one could dispute their success, with both the bedroom and living area offering an inviting and cosy refuge, especially for when the mercury starts to drop.
