European oak floorboards lead to an inviting terrace deck.

Stoic philosopher Seneca once proclaimed all art to be “an imitation of nature”.

Seneca, of course, had never graced the European oak floorboards of one of Lovelight’s most recent projects, a eye-catching cluster of townhouses in Melbourne’s Parkville suburb. Sitting right on the cusp of Royal Park, they serve as both an imitation of nature and a harmonious part of the local ecosystem.

A creation of proud Lovelight partners Everly and Fieldwork Architecture, the Collingwood-based Fieldwork designed the homes with a focus on Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), evident in their abundant natural light and 2,000L rainwater storage tanks.

Bordered by the area’s river red gum trees and characterised by natural materials, open-plan living areas, and elevated ceilings, each of the four townhouses symbolises the glorious sprawl of nature, whilst simultaneously embracing the scenic bushland that surrounds them.

Stretching over 181 hectares and visible from each terrace deck, Royal Park is Melbourne’s largest inner-city park and serves as home to an array of native trees, including eucalyptus, casuarinas, and acacias, as well as flowering shrubs and vast grasslands.

Light and nature being the ideal playmates, Lovelight equipped each living area with face-fitted, dual roller blinds in Neotec sheer and Quay blockout fabric, giving owners privacy when needed and sublime bushland vistas when desired. The same was done with the bedrooms, which contain rectangular windows exposing the local flora and flooding each room with natural light.

According to Fieldwork, the local landscape and “access to light” were central to the design, culminating in a home that is both an elemental feature of the surrounding landscape and a living reflection of native Australian habitats. The project is at once a part of nature and a work of art unto itself.
